History of Skegness:1875 Railway system extended to Skegness villages 1875 Population 500 1878 9th Earl of Scarborough drew plans for tree lined town of Skegness 1880 This decade saw the building of the pier, development of seafront gardens and the new tourist town , with seafront hotels and Clock Tower. 1882 Steamboat trips from the Pier. 2/3 hours across the Wash to Hunstanton. 1900 Skegness develops as the primary tourist destination for trippers from East Midlands. 1908 John Hassall drew the original Jolly Fisherman poster to advertise day excursions for Great Northern Railways, being paid 12 guineas. (Now displayed in Town Hall.) Excursion from Kings cross was 3 shillings. 1919 Schooner 'Europa ' hits Skegness Pier. 1921 450,000 tourists carried by rail in this year on day excursions 1930 Foreshore improvements, floral gardens, swimming bath boating lakes and more. 1936 Butlins opened 1953 First celebrity illuminations switch on by Gilbert Harding, broadcaster 1960 This decade saw 12500 static caravans in 1962 rise to 21000 by 1974. Chapel St. Leonard's and Ingoldmells became natural developments as holiday centres. 1978 Pier damaged by storms leaving the end isolated . 1982 Embassy theatre built. 1985 Remains of Pier demolished 1989 Seafront indoor swimming pool built 1995 Fantasy Island development created 1997 Redevelopment of Compass gardens 1998 Jolly Fisherman's 90th birthday. Time capsule buried under clock tower 100 year since foundation laying. Butlins resort and Tower esplanade redeveloped. 2000 Tower gardens and Embassy centre redeveloped 2001 Improvements to disabled access in Skegness 2003 Mcdonalds open the Nissen Hut 2004 Seafront water flume & Tesco store constructed 2004 Fairy Dell pools closed . 2006 Fairy Dell pools refurbishment , new indoor Skate arena
